Engineering with a public ledger

Being Open Labs: Open source dev studio for people and businesses.

We build public interest apps and tools in open source, and custom business apps for clients. 90% of profits after operations go to charity and Being Human Devils.

Open source mode: useful software is public infrastructure, not a lead magnet.

Stack visible before scope Purpose never dilutes delivery

OPEN SOURCE OPERATIONS

A capable lab is specific about what it can carry.

A1

Apps & web apps that meet people where they are.

Education helpers, mental health nudges, focus companions, accessibility aids, browser tools, and interactive dashboards. We start with the human bottleneck, not a feature inventory, and ship the smallest durable interface that removes it.

D2

Developer tools with fewer repetitive moves.

CLIs for scaffolding, logs, releases, and automation; VS Code and browser extensions; internal utilities that make a team’s everyday maintenance less fragile.

M3

Micro SaaS without the needless machinery.

Small web tools that automate regular work for students, creators, and independent businesses: intake, reminders, transformations, reporting, and lightweight workflow routing.

T4

A current stack, chosen per constraint rather than by fashion.

FRONTENDReact, Next.js, TypeScript, accessible web primitives
BACKENDAPIs, serverless functions, event queues, scheduled jobs
DATAPostgres, SQLite/D1, document stores, Redis-style caches
INFRACloudflare Pages & Workers, containers, CI deployments
O5

AI assisted, human first, and operated in public.

Where an assistant helps with summarization, content, or code, the person’s intent remains in charge. We favor inspectable prompts, clear data boundaries, and open behavior over opaque systems. Each release carries documentation, tests, CI checks, contribution guidance, and a pathway for community participation.

Documentationgetting started, rationale, decisions
Testingcritical paths before cleverness
CIrepeatable checks on every change
Communityissues that welcome a real reply
B1

Business applications built around the work, not the org chart.

Internal operations tools, HR and finance workflows, logistics views, KPI dashboards, reporting, CRMs, ticketing systems, support tooling, and admin panels. The same care scales from a growing business to a multi team enterprise.

I2

Existing systems, made to cooperate.

APIs for CRMs, payment gateways, ERPs, communication tools, and internal data. We map ownership, failure paths, retries, notifications, sync rules, and data processing before automation gets a chance to surprise anyone.

D3

AI & data for decisions that still have accountable owners.

Search and summarization across internal knowledge, carefully scoped dashboard assistants, anomaly cues, and predictive signals. We make the source, confidence, and handoff explicit rather than giving a black box the final word.

S4

Architecture that can meet the environment you already have.

APPLICATIONTypeScript, React/Next, Node, Python, Go when it earns its place
SYSTEMSPostgres, queues, cache layers, APIs, event processing
OBSERVABILITYstructured logs, error tracking, health checks, actionable alerts
DEPLOYMENTcloud, containers, on premise or hybrid delivery plans
R5

Risk reduction is a deliverable, not a footnote.

Every serious system needs clear authentication and role-based access, environment boundaries, monitoring, error tracking, backups, recovery expectations, and service level objectives. We write down the trade-offs, test the important flows, and hand over a system your team can understand, not just operate.

Accessauth, roles, permissions, auditability
Resiliencebackups, retries, recovery plan
Visibilitymetrics, logs, errors, ownership
Transferdocumentation, source, onboarding

THE LAB, IN WORKING NUMBERS

Impact and growth we’ve delivered.

The point of the commercial practice is repeatable, high-quality delivery and the ability to direct the upside toward work that would otherwise go unfunded. These are the visible contours of the lab, not vanity metrics.

02open source releases

Public work with source, documentation, and a contribution path.

07client systems selected below

A cross section of operations, data, and customer workflows.

1→1workflow to system mapping

Every build begins by naming the human handoff it needs to improve.

90%of profit after operations

Directed to education, healthcare, and Being Human Devils.

The outcome language in individual project records is intentionally scoped to the work shown. Engagement details can be discussed under the right confidentiality terms.

A PARTIAL, INSPECTABLE RECORD

Selected work from the lab.

Open work stays public. Client work is presented with enough context to understand the craft while respecting the boundaries that make a client relationship credible.

PUBLIC RELEASES · CLICK FOR THE BUILD NOTE

Client systems, where the rigor funds the public work.

Each commissioned build has its own operating conditions. The common thread is a durable system, a legible handoff, and delivery that serves a real team before it serves the portfolio.

WHAT WE LEARN IN THE WORK

Deep dives and lab sessions.

Short field notes for teams who prefer seeing the engineering question before they hear the conclusion. Video embeds can be added as each lab session is released.

LAB SESSION / WORKFLOWVIDEO SLOT

Designing approval workflows on Cloudflare Workers.

How to preserve the human decision while keeping the reminder, record, and escalation path dependable. A practical walkthrough of the workflow behind Ledgerline.

THE OPERATING COMMITMENT

Why we build, and where profits go.

Being Open Labs exists to make useful work possible in two directions: public interest software in the open, and serious systems for organizations that need them. 90% of profit after operational costs goes to under privileged education and healthcare, and to Being Human Devils: non profit film and narrative work about the moralities of living.

DELIVERY

Clients receive top-tier engineering, clear scope, and a system they can own. Purpose is never an excuse for loose delivery.

INSPIRATION

The lab is influenced by the spirit of Salman Khan’s humanitarian acts, including bone marrow donation, and a Being Human style belief that success has an obligation beyond itself. No branded imagery or borrowed narrative is used here.

LEDGER

Open source work and B2B work support kind causes, not the other way around. We welcome partners who recognize that quality and conscience can be part of the same operating model.
